You probably know a lot about why you should get a dental filling if you have a cavity. You also probably know a lot about the advantages. However, something you may wonder about is what to expect right after you receive a filling from our Columbia, TN team. Will your smile feel completely normal again immediately? Can you eat? Let us cover some frequent areas of concern!
Your Sensitivity Will Go Away!
You may find yourself in a bit of a panic when your anesthetic wears off after a dental filling and your tooth feels sensitive. Then, a couple days later, when a little bit of sensitivity is still going on, you’re really worried. Allow us to tell you right now: We just removed some of your tissue and irritated your nerves, so a little sensitivity is normal for just a bit. If it bothers you, feel free to take a pain reliever! As for the long-term outlook, it’s stellar. Sensitivity will go away soon, so you have nothing to worry about. (Note: Of course, if you find that you feel uncomfortable, you are always welcome to contact us with questions).
You’re Numb: Be Careful When Eating
To ensure you have a very comfortable experience receiving your dental filling, we numb your tissues! As a result, when you leave our practice, the tooth and the surrounding area is still quite numb and can include your tongue and your lip tissue. So, we remind you to be very careful when eating. You could bite your tongue without realizing it! Eat something very soft or wait until you get some feeling back just to be safe.
You Might Feel A Bit Tired
Yes, we know, you were just lying there in our chair, while we removed the decayed tissue, prepped your tooth, filled it with composite, dried the material, did some final sculpting, and then you went home. You may wonder, why on earth do you feel so tired? Well, when you go through any type of treatment, even a simple one, your nerves in your tooth become aggravated, your nerves in general may feel a bit aggravated, and the whole thing can be stressful (even if you experience the “good” stress that comes with experiences you don’t have every day). You may have taken off of work and moved your schedule around, you might have come in early, etc. A lot is involved sometimes! Don’t worry, it’s normal. Be kind to yourself, relax, rest, and you’ll feel better soon.
