A tooth can become infected for a number of reasons, and lack of treatment could mean worsening pain and even the loss of a tooth. But we want to help prevent this and keep your smile whole with root canal therapy. In today’s blog, your Columbia, TN, dentist talks about the process of saving your smile with a root canal procedure.

The Cause and Warning Sign of an Infected Tooth

A dental infection could occur for a number of reasons. Essentially, the infection means that harmful oral bacteria has reached the sensitive inner structure and made contact with the pulp. This could happen when a tooth is damaged through an accident, which could crack or chip the enamel. You could also have a cavity that is not treated in a timely manner, which allows it to spread and reach the pulp. When your tooth becomes infected, you may experience pain when you bite down or chew, headaches, jaw and facial aches, toothaches and tooth sensitivity, a discharge from the tooth, or swelling near it. Fever could also occur. When you experience similar symptoms, please reach out to us, you may need a root canal.

Planning the Procedure

We know that sometimes people feel anxious when they hear the words “root canal.” We understand, but want to assure you that we take precautions to ensure your treatment experience is a positive and comfortable one. To begin, we will plan the procedure in detail with detailed digital x-rays and intraoral camera images. Our team will also administer a local anesthetic to the tooth to numb it so you stay comfortable. If you have anxiety or special needs that could complicate treatment, we could also discuss sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, with little to no memory of the procedure.

The Root Canal Procedure

When the time comes for your procedure, we will open the tooth gently to remove the tissues from within. Once we do, we will thoroughly clean the interior of the tooth and then add a special restorative filling material known as gutta percha. Once we cure this material, we will cap the tooth with a dental crown, a restoration that looks natural and blends with your smile. The crown also protects your tooth from decay and reinfection. If you have any questions about how we protect smiles with a root canal, then contact our team today.
