There are some things we think you should probably know about flossing if you don’t already. The reason we think you may have an idea or two that’s not quite on target regarding this particular part of your dental hygiene, you wonder? Well, because we see many patients and there are those things we hear over and over again that let us recognize trends in thinking when it comes to dental care. Fortunately, we can provide you with insight to help you avoid misinformation and missteps, so you know your care at home is spot-on.
Brushing Isn’t Just As Good
You might tell yourself that brushing your teeth and trying to brush between teeth is just as good as flossing. As you’ve likely noticed, you can slip individual toothbrush bristles between your teeth, so you may spend a little extra time making this part of your dental hygiene to try to replace flossing. It’s a nice try, of course! However, it will not suffice. You need the floss that you’re gently pulling along tooth edges and beneath gum tissue to truly remove enough plaque to prevent issues like decay or the development of gingivitis.
If It’s Not Working, Don’t Force It
If your dental floss is slipping between your teeth, removing buildup, getting rid of food debris, and you’re having a nice time with it, then keep going! However, if you’re having trouble getting floss between two teeth, you have food that’s stuck that just won’t budge, or other obstacles present themselves, contact us so we can see you as soon as possible. Don’t force your floss or try to remove food on your own or you might injure yourself. Do see us for a visit for solutions.
