Can You Help Protect Your Baby’s Teeth?

As a parent to a new baby, your life is probably already feeling pretty hectic. After all, there are feedings, naps, and doctor’s visits. But did you know that even newborn babies could benefit from oral care, as well? That’s right. Before teeth are even visible, you can actually help to keep your baby’s smile healthy. Then, as teeth begin to erupt, there are extra preventive steps you can and should take to help keep your child’s teeth and gums in great shape!

Are You Cleaning Your Baby’s Smile After Feedings?

One simple way to keep your baby’s whole mouth healthy is by gently wiping the gums clean after feedings. This can be done with a clean, damp cloth, and it helps to remove sugar particles and bacteria that could otherwise lead to a condition known as baby bottle tooth decay.

You should also never put your child to bed with a bottle filled with milk, much less juice, , as prolonged exposure to milk can also contribute to baby bottle tooth decay.

Teeth Aren’t the Only Part of Preventive Care

Once teeth begin to erupt, you can help to keep them healthy by gently brushing each tooth. Initially you don’t even need to use toothpaste. Simply use a baby-sized toothbrush and gentle motions to clean each visible tooth. You can also continue to wipe the gums clean with a damp cloth.

Don’t Forget to See the Dentist!

Then, around your child’s first birthday, it’s important to take him or her for an initial dental visit. After the age of one, kids should begin seeing the family dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings.
